Milestones
Today I taught the entire 100 minute class period by myself. I know, it doesn't seem like much, especially considering it's what real teachers do every day. But for me it was a big step. It did not go so well in the first class I taught, but I corrected my more serious mistakes for the second class and I felt much better about it. On the one hand, this is a sign that I can learn from mistakes (which I will continue to make a lot of). But on the other, it's disappointing to remember that there's always that first class that has to be my guinea pigs.
Another big first that happened today: the first time a kid told me "F--- you" to my face. It took six weeks for that to happen? I must be doing something right.

Eh, teaching an entire class period by yourself seems like a pretty big milestone. Congratulations.
Congrats! That's a big deal, you know. And remember that you were probably someone else's guinea pig somewhere in your academic career and it hasn't scarred you for life. ;) And 100 minutes is a really long first go-kudos to you!
you are doing a good job if the students are cursing at you. It means that you are getting to them and they have nothing else to say.

Oy, 100 minutes? Even in our "block" classes in middle school there was a five-minute break after the first 45. Congratulations!

When you are up there in front of a class 100 minutes and eternity seem just about the same length of time. I don't know if swe is right that your teacher's didn't scar you for life at some point. Maybe it was a scar that made you decide to become a teacher to make things better for others.
Yup, if kids swear at you it means you are reaching them in some way. Maybe they will eventually improve their vocab enough to suggest you find your least common denominator or stick a slide ruler where the sun don't shine.
Ha! I imagine that, at the time, this was an unpleasant experience. I know I certainly don't like it when my kids feel backed into a corner enough to resort to flinging the f-word, even if it amounts to a small victory for both of us in some weird way.
By the way, Happy World Teachers' Day! October 5th, actually, so I guess I missed it by a day. Treat yourself to some Laksa or other deilsh "world" food.
Yeah, somehow I don't think I'm gonna get them to talk about slide rules in any capacity... Maybe a TI-83, though.

Congrats! I bet you were exhausted. And remember what they say to you is usually about their day rather than yours.
